Some magzines fail if they cover niche marketing, and if the audeince niche dwindles then, the magazine will suffer, and so having a more general target audience allows for more success. Also if a magazine decides that it doesnt want to cover a certain topic, which might be expected within a magzine- such as a celebrity magazine talking about cars, or something irrelevent, then, it it more likely to be failing than one which sticks to its original ideas, and things expected of it. As seen on the http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/1436715.stm website, competition is so high, that magazines are being bought out by larger companies, which in time will have more and more control over the industry. The more power behind it, the less likely the magazine will be to fail, and so if you're part of a magazine not owned by a larger company, it makes your job harder to have to compete to meet sales targets. And, seen on the http://www.independent.co.uk/news/media/heat-editor-quits-as-circulation-falls-789352.html
website, it seems that readers interests have changed, and so if your magazine is aimed soley at celebrities-something which from this website, shows us that isn't as popular as it was, then it will no longer be successful. This is something all magazines have to face though, because people's interests change so quickly.
The more successful magazines, could be said to be the ones which are well-known, and who can afford to get highly paid celebrites to pose on the front cover, but this may no longer work if the audeinces have gone off celebrity fame.
And a final point as to why some magazines are successful whilst others fail, is about how easily they can get thier magazine to the reader. If the magazine is small time, then they are more likely to fail, because they dont have the resourses to get it out to the wider public, compared to some of the big magazines- such as Elle, and Vogue, and Cosmopolitan etc.
As for lines of inquiry...i suggest dont bother starting with google, it seems rather tempremental.

i believe that the way the magazine indusrty has gone for a magazine to be succesfull it needs to be signed to a majour publisher with links with large businesses such as aol. i think that the magazine would need to be especially different to anything the publisher already has on its books or it will never be on them. the larger businesses and publishers are starting to controll the industry more than ever thus making it more difficult to be seen and get your magazine published. it will also make it incredibly difficult to match sales and keep up with copetitiors and small time publishers and magazines will find it progresivly more difficult to continue. these pionts are also expressed on

Some magazines fail because they simply dont have the sufficient funds to go up against the more leading well known magazines, more often the smaller magazines are being brought by publsishing companies so they just dont simply have enough time, or money to increase their magazine to be as successful as they hoped. also the smaller magazines often dont carry out enough research into the marketplace so they dont know who their target market is, what they want, and without knowing this how would their magazine be suitable for anyone when they dont even know who they are aiming the magazine at? The larger magazine companies have large amounts of access to information than small magazines because they have the sufficient funds to complete their market research, and to have celebrities on the front cover. A celebrity on the front cover will undoubtably sell more magazines than a magazine without, this is because people want to read about, find and feel a connection with the certain celebrity where as they dont really care about a "Knowbody" on the front cover on the front of their magazine. So magazines with large amounts of revenue will obveously be more successful than others because they simply have the money too.

Radio 4, Woman's Hour discussion draws upon the market being very split up. Some magazines are able to create their own identity. One such example given is 'glamour', which separates itself from typical woman magazines.
There is also the issue of an ongoing 'price war' which affects circulation. The reasons for the popularity behind celebrity magazines can be linked to the cheap cover prices, free gifts, and the short attention span of the average reader, large articles don't have the same appeal.

For a magazine to be successful it needs to have a large backing from a big publishing company like AOL or IPC. successful magazines like NME and Womans Weekly are successful because their publishers can afford the best advertising and the best exclusives. Samller companies can't afford big celebrity names and adverts to attract readers. Big publishers can afford to have the best prices as they sell enough magazines to cover it, smaller magaines with smaller circulation cant afford to have the lowest prices therefore dont sell as well.
Magazines are often successful because they follow the most popular genre. It is easier to tag on to a huge market such as celebrity magazines than it is to create your own. However as pointed out in the independent article these genres can becaome so saturated that people simply get bored of reading about it and magazines start to fail from the large ampount of media coverage their subject is getting.
